This pilot survey research aims to provide an overview of Traditional Chinese Medical Services (TCMS) in Thailand. The focuses of the paper are the recent development in this sector, problems of services providers and the near-term trend of the demand for TCMS. By analyzing the sample of 131 public and private hospitals, the findings can be summarized as follows: First, TCMS in Thailand have expanded rapidly. During the first 10 months of 2005, the number of new cases increased by 53.22 percent while the number of old cases increased by 7.23 percent compare to the same period of 2004. However, the TCMSin Thailand are mostly in the public hospitals and in the form of acupuncture Second, although TCMS in Thailand is the fast growing sector, about 50 percent of services provider are facing with the problem of the shortage of human resource in this area while about 31 percent are facing with the problems in other forms. For example, their patients have insufficient understanding about the Traditional Chinese Medical care. These services providers are seeking for potential supports from the South-East Asia Institute of Thai-Chinese Medicine Third, about 45.2 percent of the hospitals without TCMS plan to provide Traditional Chinese Medical care in the next 2-3 years and expect potential support from the South-East Asia Institute of Thai-Chinese Medicine, in particular, human resource development and public education, together with the existing problem of human resource shortage, it implies that further action in human resource development and public education continue to be priority tasks of the South-East Asia Institute of Thai-Chinese Medicine in responding to the increasing demand for TCMS in the near future. In addition, fast growing TCMS in Thailand implies the need for the network to strengthen the body of knowledge in this area and to strengthen the quality control system of TCMS in Thailand, as well as the need for in-dept study of TCMS system that will provide a better understanding of this sector.
